Devon Shifflett, M.M.
Pianist, Educator, and Pedagogue
Hello! I'm Devon Shifflett, a pianist, educator, and pedagogue based in Richmond, Virginia. As the founder of Shifflett Piano Studio, LLC, I am passionate about helping students of all ages discover the joy of making music. Whether you're exploring lessons for yourself or your child, I'm glad you're here!
As a versatile performer and teacher, I have performed throughout the United States, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Nevada, North Carolina, and Virginia, as well as internationally in Italy. My work spans solo performance, collaborative piano, historical keyboard performance, and piano pedagogy. I frequently present pedagogical research at national conferences, including the Music Teachers National Association National Conference and MTNA Collegiate Symposium.
At the heart of my work is a love of helping others discover the joy of music. I believe piano lessons should challenge students while remaining encouraging, engaging, and enjoyable. Whether working with a young beginner, a dedicated high school student, or an adult returning to the piano after many years away, I strive to create a welcoming environment where students can grow in confidence, creativity, and musicianship.
I serve as the Instructor of Piano at Hampden–Sydney College, where I teach applied piano lessons and maintain an active private studio. In addition, I serve as the Organist and Music Ministry Director at Saint James Armenian Church in Richmond.
I hold a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I also completed certificates in Historical Keyboard Performance and Musicology. Prior to that, I earned degrees in Piano Performance and History from Longwood University, graduating summa cum laude, and spent a semester at the University of Oxford studying English history and Norman art, architecture, and music. Along the way, I have been fortunate to study with exceptional teachers, including Dr. Annie Jeng, Dr. Marya Fancey, Dr. Lisa Kinzer, and Mrs. Cindy Stevens.
When I am not teaching or performing, I enjoy exploring the outdoors, trying new recipes, reading, and spending time with family and friends!
